This project started as a screen print project at CIEE. I was asked to create a Halloween and Fall season-themed motif to be used as a pattern on a piece of fabric. The original version of the motif was black and white, and later on was colored in order to be applied to a wider range of ideas. It shows a skeleton neighborhood during Halloween where humans are the monsters and is filled with small details. Click on each image to zoom in and explore a little bit of each scenario.
The pattern was used in many different applications and deliverables, but I find the wrapping paper solution to be the best application for this design, due to its use of the pattern format in a context where there is enough space for repetition, allowing the viewer to engage with the story and get the 'endless scenario' illusion.
I have always been drawn to immersive designs where I can zoom in and explore different parts of a narrative. The design process for this project started with a sketch of a couple of clumsy skeletons I had on my notebook, they fitted the Halloween theme and had a sense of fun and charisma about them. Then I expanded the story with some different scenarios and placed them together in a motif sheet of paper so they could fit together in a pattern. Later, I traced the images on Illustrator and colored them with a color palette that reminds me of the warmer days of the Fall season leading to Halloween.
'TRUTH' COMPANY CAMPAIGN – THE DEAD PHARMA PROTEST
A couple of years after the project's completion, the anti-tobacco company 'Truth' requested a campaign mockup with a similar illustration to my Halloween pattern for a protest held against a pharmacy that was selling cigarettes to their customers. They wanted a satirical anti-smoke campaign but were very clearly pointing out that they didn't want any references to actual cigarettes in the illustrations in order not to trigger any negative feelings on people who have quit smoking. For this project, I delivered a logo and a Facebook banner.
